His mother was a guitarist who moved him to St.
Louis in 1913. He lost eyesight due to glaucoma in
1926, and served time in local workhouse that same
year, where he taught self guitar. He played for tips
at house parties, sidewalks, clubs and bars through
the 20's into the 30's. He was ordained deacon of
King Solomon Holy House of Prayer, East St. Louis,
in 1954. Influenced by Peetie Wheatstraw.
