CPH Slim Wins Danish Blues Artist of the Year Award

Nisse Thorbjorn, aka CPH Slim
The Danish Blues Artist of the Year 2009 award has been presented to the singer, guitarist and harmonica player Nisse Thorbjorn, aka CPH Slim. In 1996 Nisse moved to Copenhagen where he formed the band Nisse and The Real Thing. Some years later he performed with his new band Hot Shot Love at the Copenhagen Blues Festival 2002. The style was pure Chicago Blues, and Nisse revealed his talent with some harmonica play and a voice that drew comparisons to Blind Lemon Jefferson and Howlin’ Wolf.

In 2003 Nisse went to Chicago for three months for inspiration. He listened to the local Blues artists in Southside’s Blues clubs, and he jammed with Lurrie Bell, Billy Branch, and John Primer.

As a solo performer Nisse had his CD debut in 2002 along with a range of solo performers on the live CD The Copenhagen Blues Session, Vol 1CPH Slim, with Peter Thorup singing duet with Nisse on the track. The CD includes, besides Nisse’s own strong compositions, a handful of interpretations of works by Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker and Brownie McGhee.

The award was founded by Copenhagen Blues Festival in 2002 as an appreciation of a Danish blues musician, who has made a significant musical and artistic contribution to Danish blues music.

The award is 10.000 DKR, co-sponsored by the festival, Amager Bio and Mojo Blues Bar. With the award comes a prize check of 10.000 DKR, sponsored by the Copenhagen Blues Festival, Amager Bio and MOJO Blues Bar.
