Michael Burks

Michael BurksMichael recently played BB's, and we hear that it was a great show. Oliver Sain had stopped by after his guest appearence with Little Milton down at the Sparta Blues fest, and filled us in! Our newest STLBlues street team member is Shannon, and Michael shared a few words with her for STLBlues. Hope you enjoy!

Where were you born?
In Milwaukee, WI. I moved to Arkansas at a young age and currently reside there.

What is your preferred musical instrument?
Guitar; I started playing at age 2 and began touring locally in Arkansas at age 6. I like the organ also.

Who influenced you musically?
My father (bass player) had the most influence of all. He played with numerous big timers including Rice Miller (SonnyBoy). Also Freddy King, Alblert King, and T-Bone Walker (Michael toured w/ him for three months in late 1970-71.)

Anyone in your family musically inclined?
My grandfather played delta style blues way back when, and my brother also plays guitar.

Who do you enjoy listening to?
Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Freddy King, Albert King

Have you done any recordings?
3 releases which are From the Inside Out (nominated for W.C. Handy for that one), Make it Rain (alligator), and I Smell Smoke (new on Alligator).

Fav musical moment:
Playing with BB King for BB's 71st Birthday

Fav gig and why:
I really enjoy BB's best because of the blues type atmosphere and the people come here for one reason--the blues/jazz music!!

What are your goals?
Keep recording albums, touring, and making a living!! Also enjoy doing blues/jazz festivals (does about 40-50 a year). I would have liked to do the Sparta Blues fest this year, (I've done it in years prior) but couldn't do that and BB's too.

What do you think of the state of blues currently?
I think things are picking up and doing better after 9/11, new clubs are happening and things will continue to move forward, as well as the blues fan base.

What is your website? MichaelBurks.com
